Midfielder amongst most popular players, says MON.

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has hailed David Meyler’s sunny outlook after seeing the midfielder make his full international debut.

Meyler played the full 90 minutes for his native Republic of Ireland against Oman on Wednesday evening to earn his first senior cap.

It was a particularly sweet moment for the 23-year-old, who has battled back from two serious injuries to bounce back on to the first-team scene at Sunderland.

But his team-mates will have been just as delighted with O’Neill rating Meyler amongst the most popular figures on the playing staff.

He said: “David is a great character in the dressing room and on the training field – he’s always got a smile on his face.

“Even I’m feeling grumpy myself, it’s hard to imagine him being anything other than appreciative of the footballing life.

“He’s had a torrid time with injuries so it’s great to see him doing well.

“David is one of the most popular players in the dressing room, and I think deservedly so.”
