Johnson returns to action.

After watching his side claim a 2-0 victory over MK Dons in the Capital One Cup, manager Martin O’Neill drew a number of positives from the game.

The Black Cats boss was delighted with how his side pulled together to get the win following Lee Cattermole’s red card and was thrilled to see both Craig Gardner and James McClean on the score sheet.

Another plus point for O’Neill was seeing summer signing Adam Johnson return to action after a spell on the sidelines due to injury.

The England international was named on the bench for the clash at Stadium: MK and made an appearance late in the game.

“I brought Adam on to give him a few minutes on the pitch.” O’Neill said after the game.

“The second goal helped make my mind up about that. I wanted to bring him on and make him feel involved again.

“We’ll see how he is after that cameo and try and get him fit and ready for Saturday.”
