Club legend on facing super Scot.

Sunderland legend Jimmy Montgomery has added his voice to the chorus of praise for hitman Steven Fletcher.

The forward has earned plenty of praise after taking his season’s goal tally to 10 with an ice-cold brace at Wigan last weekend.

Steven is always a jack the lad in the box, but he has more to his game

Fletcher, who joined Sunderland from Wolves last summer, is rapidly establishing himself as the one of the Barclays Premier League’s top marksmen and is averaging almost a goal every other game this season.

Few in the game know more about facing strikers than Montgomery, who is Sunderland’s record appearance-maker having played 627 times for the club.

And he says Fletcher’s blend of finishing ability and awareness make him a nightmare for opposing goalkeepers to deal with.

“The goals he scored on Saturday were unbelievable, particularly the first one where he reacted to the keeper’s save,” the club favourite explained.

“He’s a proven goalscorer and the money we paid for him has been rewarded.

“Steven is always a jack the lad in the box. But he has more to his game – he can hold the ball up so well, bring people into play and then spin off and get into the penalty area.

“He knows where to be and when. Getting more quality balls into the box is only going to enhance is goalscoring prowess.”
