Wickham scores, Rose features and Burke saves last-minute penalty.
Connor Wickham was man of the match for England U21s as Stuart Pearce’s side thumped Austria 4-0 in Brighton last night.
Wickham provided the cross for Bolton Wanderers’ Marvin Sordell to score England’ss third goal before Wickham coolly rounded the keeper and grabbed the Three Lions’ fourth.
Austria finished the game with nine men as Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey gave the hosts the lead before Josh McEachran, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough from Chelsea, doubled England’s advantage.
Danny Rose also featured, playing the first half.
Elsewhere, Sunderland U18 goalkeeper Peter Burke was in action for the Republic of Ireland U17’s as they opened up their U17 European Championship Elite Group campaign with a 1-0 win over hosts Austria.
Burke, who joined Sunderland at the start of the 2012-13 season, saved Adrian Grbic’s penalty in the 90th minute to secure Ireland’s victory which sees them in a commanding early position in their group.
