U23 preview: Lads face Wigan in PL Cup

Sunderland Under-23s are back on the road on Wednesday as they take on Wigan Athletic in the Premier League Cup (KO 1pm).

The Lads travel to Christopher Park looking to build on their win over Leeds United in Group E last time out.

Mike Dodds’ side have racked up three points so far in the group after losing out to Mansfield Town before victory over the Whites.

Team news

Jack McIntyre is expected to start between the sticks after completing the 90 minutes in both PL Cup games so far.

Full-back Kenton Richardson will miss the contest following his short-term switch to Spennymoor Town on loan, while Sam Wilding is fully fit and available after recovering from an injury.

Opposition

Today’s hosts play their league football in the Professional U23 Development League, and currently sit in fifth place with nine points from seven games.

The Latics come into the game with just one defeat from their previous six games, and one more win in Group E would all but seal their place in the next round of the competition.

Eight current Latics Under-23 players featured for the first team last week, as they recorded a 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town to progress to the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy.

How to follow

There will be no tickets for the game due to training ground protocols, but supporters can follow the action on Twitter @SunderlandAFC.
