Academy: Michael Spellman signs new contract

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce that Michael Spellman has signed a new contract with the Club.

Spellman has penned a one-year deal, extending his stay on Wearside until 2024.

The young winger scored one goal and assisted four in eight Premier League 2 games last season, and also made his first-team debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup First Round, replacing Elliot Embleton in the 80th minute.

The 20-year-old also gained valuable experience out on loan, first with Whitby Town in the NPL Premier Division, and later with Blyth Spartans in the National League North.

Academy Manager Robin Nicholls said: “We are happy to be continuing the journey with Michael. Although he came into our system quite late in terms of age group, he was fortunate enough to make his debut for our First Team towards the start of last season and also had a successful loan spell with Blyth Spartans. We hope we can provide the right platform for the final stages of his development as a youth player.”

The player's contract will officially start on 1 July 2023.
