Academy: Get to know - Jonny Maddison

We continue our behind-the-scenes insight into the individuals who help provide support to the current and future players of Sunderland AFC.

 

Next up is Academy Goalkeeping Coach, Jonny Maddison.

 

Jonny started his career with the Black Cats and made his way through the AoL.

 

The 29-year-old went on to play for Crawley Town and Leicester City.

 

Maddison was a part of the Leicester City Premier League winning squad in 2015-16 before starting his coaching career back on Wearside.

Time at the Club:

 

One year as a coach. 11 years since my previous 10-year spell as a player (U9s - U18s)

 

Role:

 

Providing support and coaching to our goalkeepers throughout the AoL and creating a pathway for the success of their individual careers.

 

How would you describe a normal working day?

 

"A normal day I’d arrive around 8:30 for breakfast with some of the staff and players.

 

"Afterwards, we have a 9am PDP team meeting to discuss training needs, alongside some session planning for the day.

 

"Shortly after, I’m in the gym for a 15-minute chat on the bike with Pruds (Mark Prudhoe) and all the GKs before heading into our A.M session with the PDP GKs.

 

"After lunch there is opportunities for post-match analysis sessions with either the PDP and/or day-release GKs to debrief the weekends fixtures.

 

"We are then back on the grass for an afternoon session - this time working mainly the ILPs of the GK’s specific needs.

 

"Evenings consist of training with the FP and YDP GKs (U9s-U16s) before I set off home.”

 

Tell us one thing you love about your role?

 

"I love being out on pitch with all the players and watching them develop/ grow not only as players, but as people.

 

"The social elements between players and staff are also great."

 

Name us one goal for the future?

 

"My goal, like many other staff at SAFC, would be to provide the best opportunity for as many players to progress through the system at SAFC to achieve their aspirations to be professional footballers."
