Ahead of the game against Southend, the club’s official charity, Foundation of Light launched their Mental Health Matchday Hub.
Representatives from Sunderland AFC, the Foundation of Light and former players were there to officially open the hub at the Beacon of LIght.
The initiative, which aims to promote positive change through a range of new initiatives and programmes, is run in partnership with SAFC supporters' group, Sunderland Branch Liaison Council, and Washington Mind, this is the first in a series of 13 Matchday Hubs that will provide counselling support for any fans who are experiencing mental health challenges.
The Hub will offer a free, informal and confidential drop-in service for both home and away fans on SAFC home matchdays at the Beacon of Light.
The initiaive is the first of its kind in the UK and will see qualified, experienced counsellors from Washington Mind and a trained volunteer from the Branch Liaison Council supporting fans in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
