Goal of the Season: Maguire wins supporters' award

Chris Maguire’s last-minute volley against Crewe Alexandra has won the David Dent Goal of the Season award.

Selected by the members of the Branch Liaison Council, the award was created in memory of Sunderland supporter David Dent, who ran the Sedgefield branch with his father Clive before he sadly passed away in 2020.

Maguire collects the inaugural award for capping off a memorable comeback with a fine solo strike, with the forward’s 97-minute stunner following Jordan Jones’ earlier wonder goal at Gresty Road.

The Scot joins Charlie Wyke and Dion Sanderson in winning this season’s supporters’ awards, after the former duo collected Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year accolades.

David’s father, Clive, said: “Janet and I would like to thank the BLC for naming the supporters’ new Goal of the Season award after our son, David. He would be over the moon and honoured to have this named after him because he was red and white through and through. There was plenty of competition, but Chris Maguire is the inaugural winner for his brilliant goal against Crewe Alexandra.”
