Stadium of Light: Lionesses return to Wearside in September

England will return to Sunderland in September, as the Stadium of Light plays host to the Lionesses’ UEFA Women’s Nations League opener against Scotland.

 

The fixture will take place on Friday 22 September (19:45 KO), with the reigning European champions heading back to Wearside for the first time since November 2021.

 

Sunderland AFC’s Sky Bet Championship fixture versus Cardiff City has been rescheduled as a result, with the Black Cats now hosting the Bluebirds 24 hours later on Sunday 24 September (15:00 KO).

 

The UEFA Women’s Nations League match-up is the latest milestone in an iconic Wearside legacy, with Beth Mead, Carly Telford, Demi Stokes, Jill Scott, Jordan Nobbs, Lucy Bronze, Lucy Staniforth and Steph Houghton all spending part of their careers at SAFC Women.

 

Ellen White struck in a 1-0 win over Austria in the Lionesses’ most recent north-east outing, with England’s record goalscorer celebrating her 100th international cap in style.

 

Ticket information for the Lionesses’ Stadium of Light return will be communicated shortly, with supporters able to keep up to date with the latest news by following @Lionesses on Twitter.

 

Sarina Wiegman’s side will begin their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign this weekend, facing Haiti in Brisbane before taking on Denmark and China in Group D.
