Johnny Crossan is a hero of the club's first-ever promotion season in 1964, and will be honoured at our 2023 Hall of Fame on Friday 10 November.
A goal-scoring inside forward, Crossan was the subject of interest from SAFC even as an amateur.
Upon joining, the Northern Irish product settled immediately, scoring 15 goals in 32 games as his side narrowly missed out on promotion. However, promotion would follow the next season, with an even more remarkable 27 goals coming across that campaign, including a brace against Manchester United in the FA Cup Quarter Final.
Crossan succeeded internationally while playing for the Lads too, making half of his 24 appearances for Northern Ireland while with the Club. Johnny even scored against England at Wembley whilst on Sunderland’s books.
His time at Sunderland concluded with a move to Manchester City in 1966, before stops in Belgium and Ireland later in his career.
