Match report: Lasses beaten by Baggies

Sunderland Ladies left Coles Road empty handed this afternoon, suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion Women.

Hannah Baines’ header put the Baggies in front late into the second half, before Holly Manders brought the game level with a replica goal.

But Keeley Davies would upset the travelling side with two minutes of gametime left, volleying the ball past Claudia Moan to secure the points.

Captain Keira Ramshaw got the game underway for the Lasses, and she also had the first couple of chances in the fixture.

First, a blocked shot inside the area thwarted the captain, and then a header at the back post that trickled just wide.

Grace McCatty was in fine form, too, making an excellent last-ditch challenge in her own box to deny the Baggies a clear chance. Moments later, Natalie Murray attempted an audacious overhead kick, but it didn't trouble Moan, instead flying into the stands.

Moan’s first real threat of the day came in the form of an in-swinging free-kick around the 25-minute mark, but the 'keeper read the play well and was equal to it.

Farrugia had a flurry of chances just before half-time but was unable to capitalise on any of them, the best of the bunch a half-volley which rattled the crossbar five minutes before the break.

West Brom broke the deadlock on 72 minutes when Baines met a well-worked corner to head home from six yards.

However, Sunderland responded immediately, Manders scoring a header of her own to get the Black Cats back into the game.

A flurry of chances spilled SAFC’s way, including Ramshaw hitting the post, but it was Davies who would ruin the momentum for the Black Cats, smashing a volley into the roof of the net to secure a home win.

After scoring their second, Albion displayed good game management to see the remaining minutes out – despite Sunderland doing everything in their power to change the result.
