Mel Reay has given her take on Thursday night’s upcoming Continental Cup fixture against Blackburn Rovers Ladies – the second of Sunderland’s group stage matches in the competition.
The Lasses started well in the tournament with a late penalty shootout win over Sheffield United last month, and Reay is keen to continue momentum after Sunday’s Championship win at Charlton Athletic.
“We’re looking forward to the game, especially because of the result and performance we had on Sunday,” the Ladies Head Coach said ahead of the game.
“Obviously, we’re looking to continue that momentum, but as well the squad will be freshened up and players will be given an opportunity.
“There will be some rotation in the squad, and it’s important for everyone to get minutes, because anyone could be needed at any point in the season.”
Opponents Blackburn open their cup campaign with Thursday’s match at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium in Preston, and Reay has given her thoughts on the Lasses’ opponents, who they have already beaten 2-0 in league action at the Stadium of Light back in September.
“We’re expecting a tough battle with Blackburn.
“We anticipate the pitch to be quite heavy, given the recent weather conditions, and some of our players have been working and travelling a lot – so it’s a game we do have to manage carefully.
“It’ll be a tough test, but it’s one we’re definitely excited for and hopefully players can showcase what they can do, and we can take another positive result in the group.”
