Team news: Wright out of Fleetwood clash

Sunderland will be without Bailey Wright when they face Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening.

Lee Johnson has confirmed that the centre back is expected to miss three weeks in total, starting from last week’s Papa John’s Trophy victory over Lincoln City.

Tom Flanagan is also likely to miss Tuesday’s match-up against the Cod Army, but like Ross Stewart and Benji Kimpioka, the defender is making progress.

Speaking to safc.com, Johnson provided an update from the treatment room.

“Bailey is probably looking at three weeks from last Wednesday, so that’s his point of return,” explained the head coach.

“Flanno has been joining in gently – under no pressure and without chaos – just in straight lines and passing drills, but we hope to get him back as quickly as possible.”

He continued: “I’m sure Ross will almost be feeling like the forgotten man because as a new player, you want to come into a club and hit the ground running.

“He’s back out there running and he’s moving again, but whilst we have strikers in form, we can afford to take our time.

“We also have Benji Kimpioka back in and about it, and it’s been nice to see him because he’s a player I didn’t know an awful lot about until I came into the building.

“Everybody speaks well of him and it’s good to get another young player in the squad, but he needs to tick the boxes – and minutes – because it was a big injury, so at the moment we are just allowing him to progress at his own pace.”
