Preview: Lads set for Tranmere visit

Sunderland AFC face their penultimate pre-season game against Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday evening (KO 7pm).

Lee Johnson’s side travel to Prenton Park off the back of a comprehensive 4-0 win at Harrogate Town on Saturday, with a brace from Elliot Embleton, one from Carl Winchester and an own goal sealing the win.

Tonight, the Lads face Rovers for the first time since their Papa John’s Trophy triumph back in March at Wembley Stadium.

Bailey Wright could return for Sunderland after missing the previous three friendlies through injury, while Lee Johnson is expected to field a younger side for the journey south.

Tonight’s hosts narrowly missed out on promotion back to Sky Bet League One last season, losing out to eventual play-off winners Morecambe in the semi-final.

Micky Mellon’s side have won three out of three so far in pre-season, with victories over Rangers, Stalybridge Celtic and Warrington Town.

There will also be a familiar face in the opposition ranks in former SAFC winger Callum McManaman, following his arrival in July.
