Match Preview: Lads' long trip to Argyle

Sunderland will look to confirm a place in the Sky Bet League One play-offs on Saturday afternoon, during the long trip to Plymouth Argyle (3pm).

The Lads’ final away fixture of the regular season and the May opener represents an opportunity to begin to make amends following our recent winless run.

Form guide

Lee Johnson’s side are seeking a first win since April 2, as we attempt to secure our play-off campaign and gather momentum towards the end of the season.

Plymouth have taken just one point from their last five league games, conceding 16 goals. Ryan Lowe’s side however sit 18th in the table and are now mathematically safe from any relegation threat – nine points clear with two matches to play.

Last five meetings

January 2021: Sunderland 1-2 Plymouth

March 2019: Sunderland 2-0 Plymouth

November 2018: Plymouth 0-2 Sunderland

February 2007: Plymouth 0-2 Sunderland

August 2006: Sunderland 2-3 Plymouth

Opposition

Plymouth Argyle have a long and established history in the league game and are competing in their first season back in League One following promotion – Sunderland’s Callum McFadzean was part of the successful squad at Home Park. Their last appearance in the Championship came in 2009-10. The most southerly and westerly club in the EFL, Argyle have enjoyed a total of 12 promotions from the third division, also reaching three domestic cup semi-finals.

Around the grounds

All 12 matches in League One are due to take place simultaneously on Saturday at 3pm, with Peterborough United and Lincoln City the pick of the fixtures elsewhere. Peterborough can secure automatic promotion with just a point, whilst if Lincoln win, they can move within five points of the Posh with a game in hand. Northampton Town host Blackpool knowing only a win will do in their survival bid, whilst Rochdale are on the cusp of the same fate as they take on Doncaster Rovers. Wigan Athletic, not out of the woods yet, travel to Hull City, who can become champions.
