Carabao Cup Preview: Lads visit Wigan in third round

Sunderland will look to advance to the Carabao Cup fourth round on Tuesday night, taking on Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium (KO 7:45pm).

The Lads have already beaten Leam Richardson’s side once this season on the opening day of Sky Bet League One, but will face a tough test against a Wigan side who now lead the division on goal difference.

Team news

Lee Johnson could be expected to make changes as has been the case in the Carabao Cup wins over Port Vale and Blackpool thus far, with several players pushing for an opportunity.

Lee Burge, Frederik Alves and Alex Pritchard could be among those to feature – Corry Evans returned to fitness with a substitute appearance against Fleetwood Town at the weekend, whilst Aiden O’Brien already has four goals to his name in the competition this campaign, taking the Player of Round Two award.

Opposition

Wigan Athletic have enjoyed a fruitful past few weeks, with Richardson’s side beginning to look a real force. The Latics have reached the third round via two penalty shootouts, eliminating Hull City and Bolton Wanderers on spot-kicks so far.

The Black Cats will once again come up against some familiar faces – Max Power has excelled in the early weeks of the season having already claimed four assists, whilst Charlie Wyke scored his first two goals for the club in their 4-1 win at Accrington Stanley at the weekend. Jordan Jones could also feature for the Lancashire side at the DW, having spent the second half of last season on loan on Wearside.

Around the grounds

The Lads’ contest against Wigan comes alongside 15 other third round ties to be played over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday. Holders Manchester City host Wycombe Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium, whilst Chelsea host Aston Villa and Tottenham head to Wolves.

Arsenal invite AFC Wimbledon across London to the Emirates, whilst Leeds go to Fulham and Liverpool visit Norwich. Burnley host Rochdale, having knocked out Newcastle United on penalties in the second round.
