Injury Update: Aji Alese out for 3-4 weeks

Defender Aji Alese has been ruled out of action for the next 3-4 weeks.

Alese left Ewood Park with a protective boot on his foot after receiving a heavy challenge in the second half of the Lads defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

Following medical assessments, he will miss this weekend’s Championship tie against Burnley and looks set to be out until the World Cup break.

“Aji is injured. He is in a boot at the moment” confirmed head coach Tony Mowbray.

“He’s had a scan. It’s not as bad as we thought it might be because it looked a real bad one when you watched the incident back on the video. He has twisted his ankle as well as taking a real heavy kick on it as well.

“He’s in a preventative boot at the moment which stops him stressing the area. Best case scenario is 3-4 weeks which takes us to the World Cup break. Hopefully he can get himself fit through that period.”

The 21-year-old has started the last seven games for the first-team and scored his first senior goal in the 2-2 draw against Watford last month.

Mowbray continued: “It’s a shame for him and it’s disappointing for the team because he’s been magnificent since he broke into the team four weeks ago. We’re really disappointed but it’s an opportunity for somebody else to step up and I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Elsewhere, Lynden Gooch is racing to be fit for the weekend’s game against the Clarets as missing the loss to Rovers in midweek.

“Lynden has got a chance” added Mowbray. “The hope is that he puts his boots on tomorrow and comes out to train.

“I think people wouldn’t question Lynden Gooch if he’s got half a chance to play. I’m hopeful but he hasn’t trained today. He’s probably still aware of his injury but the hope he has improving every day.

“We’ll see how he is on the grass tomorrow and hopefully he will be available.”
