Departure: Winchester departs on loan

Sunderland AFC can confirm that Carl Winchester has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan.

The deal, which will run until the end of the 2022-23 season, includes an option for the Club to recall the midfielder in January.

The midfielder made 45 appearances for the Black Cats last season, scoring three goals as the Club won promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.

A fan-favourite throughout his time on Wearside, Winchester joins former SAFC players Aiden O’Brien and Tom Flanagan at the New Meadow.

The Northern Ireland international, who moved to the Stadium of Light from Forest Green Rovers in January 2021, has featured 67 times for the Lads in all competitions.

Kristjaan Speakman said: “Carl is at a stage of his career whereby he wants to be playing regular football and after concluding our incoming business, we agreed that it suited both parties for him to spend the remainder of the season on loan. He played an important part in our promotion last season and he will be missed by players and staff alike. We know Carl is a popular player amongst our fan base and like us, I’m sure our supporters appreciate the contribution he has made to the Club throughout his time at the Stadium of Light.”

All at SAFC would like to wish Carl the best of luck during his loan spell at the New Meadow.
