The Sunderland Story: Kyril Louis-Dreyfus discusses upcoming SAFC production

Sunderland Chairman Kyril Louis Dreyfus has emphasised that Sunderland Empire’s upcoming theatre production, The Sunderland Story, written and produced in association with the Club, is a production that will transcend many generations across the fanbase and that fans of all ages will have their eyes widened by the show.

The Sunderland Story, which runs from Wednesday 17 May – Saturday 27 May, will take audiences on a trip down memory lane up to the modern day telling the epic tale of Sunderland AFC’s history from the first trophy win to the team’s legendary managers and scores including Watson, Stokoe, Reid, Cochrane Campbell and Gurney.

It will celebrates one of the biggest moments in SAFC’s history 50 years ago, that glorious 1973 FA Cup win but continues to tell the story of the club right up until the epic celebrations of the 2022 League One play-offs.

Louis Dreyfus said: “When I initially came, I didn’t know too much about the history of the club but what was really clear to me was how important the history is to the fanbase.

“The first thing I heard from 99.9% of the people I spoke to here was about the 1973 FA Cup final which mimics how important it is for everyone that is associated with the football club.

“Given that it is the 50 year anniversary is coming up this year, I think it is amazing that everyone here has put in the effort to try and bring the whole history and tell it in a different way.”

The theatre production will also pay a heartfelt tribute to all the Sunderland greats that are no longer with us and the supporters who remain the football club’s future and past, famed for their passion throughout football.

Louis-Dreyfus continued: “I’ve spent hours with Rob Mason (club historian) talking about the history but it’s going to be interesting to see that being told in a musical and artistic way. Hopefully it should be good entertainment for every Sunderland fan, it doesn’t matter the age.”
