In Focus: Get to know Jenson Seelt

Get to know Sunderland’s latest arrival as defender Jenson Seelt completes his move from PSV Eindhoven.

Seelt started his experience with the elite of Dutch football at NEC Nijmegen before joining PSV as a 15-year-old. He has become mainly a product of the 24-time Eredivisie winners with having spent six years playing in the youth ranks across various age groups.

Standing a six foot three inches tall, Seelt is a ball playing defender who is comfortable with passing at range. He has likened his own style of play to Manchester United centre half, Champions League and World Cup winner Raphael Varane. It wouldn’t be a bad career if Seelt would go on to emulate Varane’s success over time.

Holland has a rich history of blooding some of the world’s best footballing talent and the hope is that Seelt will go on to follow a similar trajectory. His guidance in Eindhoven has been overseen by current Wolfsburg assistant manager Vincent Heilmann and former PSV and Aston Villa defender Wilfred Bouma who was capped 37 times by The Netherlands during his career.

As a reward for his development, his first professional contract would be signed on 23 May 2019 which represented a proud moment in his early career as PSV remained keen to develop his obvious footballing talent.

Having made his way through the various age groups, Seelt became no stranger to second tier football in the Netherlands going on to make 63 appearances for Jong PSV in the Eerste Divisie. He has also even shown an eye for goal having netted seven times from a defensive position.

15 May 2022 was when his special moment would come as he made his first professional appearance for PSV Eindhoven during a 2-1 victory of PEC Zwolle. Nine further appearances in the matchday squad would follow without game time on the pitch but his journey for first-team football has led him to move to Sunderland, making him the fourth signing of the summer.

As the Club looking to continue their mantra of nurturing young talent for the future, Seelt is seen as a key part of that trajectory as he joins Hemir, Nectarios Triantis and Jobe Bellingham in becoming a part of the Club’s first team over the summer.
