Interview: Alex Pritchard reflects on 100 SAFC appearances

After making his 100th appearance in Red and White during the Lads’ win over Sheffield Wednesday, Alex Pritchard has paid tribute to the support he’s received from the fanbase over the years.

After signing in the summer of 2021, Pritchard has been part of a side that has catapulted its way from League One to the Championship. A man-of-the-match award and two assists in the Play-Off final secured a 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley and a place back in the second tier.

He went on to make 43 appearances and score four goals the following season as Tony Mowbray’s men sealed a Championship Play-Off place.

Pritchard has helped the side’s attacking output with 22 assists, a career best for any side he has played for, and eight goals in total.

Friday’s 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday saw him clock up a century in Sunderland colours and once again, played an important role in the win providing the assist for Dan Ballard’s opening goal.

“It’s been an incredible ride”, said Pritchard. “From the day I decided to join, it’s hard to imagine the journey we would go on to have.

“There has been some incredible moments on the pitch with Wembley being a standout highlight but my time here has meant so much.

“I’ve shared the dressing room with some brilliant players and characters and created memories to last a lifetime, but I can’t thank the supporters enough for the love they have given me.

“My love for football came burning back when I was playing in front of you all at the Stadium of Light and I always try to give the love back in my performances.”
