Women Report: SAFC Women 0-2 London City Lionesses

SAFC Women 0-2 London City Lionesses

SAFC Women lost out to London City Lionesses in the Barclays Women’s Championship at Eppleton on Sunday afternoon.

The away side have now gone 360 minutes without conceding as goals from Amy Rodgers and Sarah Ewens sealed the win for the visitors.

The game was halted for a long period of time towards the end after a collision in the box, with Neve Herron being stretchered off, but thankfully the initial assessment was a positive one.

Both sides had early chances from corners to take the lead, first with the visitors, and later Grace McCatty’s header went straight into the goalkeeper’s hands.

London City took the lead 32 minutes in as Rodgers’ long-ranged effort took a wicked deflection, looping over Claudia Moan and into the net for their first of the game.

The Lasses battled well all throughout the game, and Herron saw an effort go over the bar 48 minutes in as she cut onto her left foot and struck towards goal to no avail.

Moan made a terrific stop from close range to deny the away side a second, with Brianna Westrup also making a fine block to thwart the rebound.

Ewens doubled London City’s lead in the 74th minute, with her header finding the bottom corner from Lucy Fitzgerald’s cross.

With the game stopped for Herron’s injury, the second half played close to the hour mark, but the Lasses just fell short as they now prepare for two games on the road, with Southampton up first next weekend.
