Women Preview: Eppleton return against Charlton

SAFC Women return to Eppleton for the first time this season in the Barclays Women’s Championship as they host Charlton Athletic Women on Sunday (KO 11:30pm).

Last time out, the Lasses were narrowly beaten 1-0 by league leaders Bristol City Women at the Robins High Performance Centre, with a goal from Shania Hayles separating the two sides.

Mel Reay is expected to have a near-full house to select from, among her 21-player fit first-team squad.

Karen Hills’ Charlton have started the season off strongly, winning two of their three opening league games – a 2-0 away win against Southampton on the opening day and a 3-0 home victory last weekend against Birmingham City – and currently sit third in the table.

The Addicks have scored eight goals already so far this campaign, with Emily Simpkins and Ella Rutherford both on two goals.

Reay’s side had an impressive record against the visitors last season, winning both home and away fixtures, with Grace McCatty scoring the only goal of the game at The Oakwood, and a double from Neve Herron sealing the 2-0 win at Eppleton in March.

Sunday’s game will be streamed live on the Lasses official Twitter account @SAFCWomen, alongside text updates.

Following the contest in DH5, our newly formed Women’s Under-23 side will be taking on Stockton Town Ladies at the Academy of Light at 2pm in their first-ever league fixture. Supporters are welcome to attend and show their support to the girls for free.
