SAFC Women: Club announce hybrid playing model

SAFC Women will implement a hybrid playing model from the start of the 2023-24 season.

A step forward on the pathway to becoming a full-time professional outfit, the transition to a hybrid playing model will see some members of the women’s senior team join the Club on a full-time basis.

The approach will also allow other players to remain with the Club in a part time capacity, as they continue to forge successful careers outside of football across a diverse range of industries.

Mel Reay’s side have enjoyed a progressive campaign on and off the pitch in the Barclays Women’s Championship, with the Lasses currently ranked 10th ahead of their final league encounter of the season.

Several players have also earned international recognition following their performances at domestic level and the Women’s Under-23 side are currently enjoying an unbeaten inaugural campaign.

Domonic Bylett’s outfit are close to clinching the Durham FA Women’s League One title, with the Foundation of Light’s Regional Talent Centre also continuing to go from strength to strength.

Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said: “We have fully integrated the women’s team within our football operation throughout the past two seasons and following promotion in 2021, the Club has made an assured transition to the second tier. We remain committed to playing our part in the development of the women’s game and believe our continued investment will allow the team to take further strides forward during the 2023-24 season.”

Alex Clarke added: “The team’s progression since the festive period has been supported by the recruitment of a range of full-time staff, which will also ensure the appropriate resource is in place as we move to a hybrid model. We have a talented young squad in place and this progression will further support their development, as we strive to compete with the sides currently competing for top-flight promotion.”
