Sunderland AFC has today taken a step towards becoming one of the first net zero Clubs in the United Kingdom by submitting a planning application to South Tyneside Council for the installation of a renewable energy generating solar farm at the Academy of Light.
Located on the land to the east and west of the Club's training centre, the planning application for a facility up to 40MWe includes ground mounted photovoltaic arrays in addition to a substation, transformer stations, switchgear, site accesses, security measures, and other ancillary infrastructure, landscaping, and biodiversity enhancements.
Planning permission is being sought for a 30-year period from the date of first exportation of energy from the solar farm, which would generate a clean, renewable, and sustainable form of electricity.
